Gods and Costumes

Disc. 0: This post is not entirely about concepts of God or Spirituality
Disc. 1: The song "Seval Kodi" (from the Tamil movie "Billa") is one of the inspirations for this post
Disc. 2: No intention of denigrating any God or the sentiments of the people. Just read it for fun.

There are countless concepts, theories, beliefs, realizations and assumptions about God; "Idol Worship" is predominant among them. As changes happen in every aspect, from layman's life style to rocket scientist's research methodology, they are bound to happen in the way people seek God & Spirituality. The concepts of Deepam & Aarathi[1],[2] have transformed a lot in the past – people started off with burning woods, then used oil, then camphor, then electric lamps/lights and who knows, may be in future, using some digital projectors. Similarly the way temples are built – Rajaraja Cholan[3] built the Tanjavur Brihadeeswarar temple using majestic stones; my elementary school teachers told he used elephants to carry those gigantic masses. (The biggest of all the stones at the top of the tower still amazes me a lot – without any machines or electricity, how did they manage to take them to such a height. As a kid, I used to think that they built it lengthwise on the ground and rotated it by 90 degrees, like I did in building set games). Today, the temples are built using ultra polished marbles & granite-stones, have intelligent security systems, advanced and hassle-free Q systems, with built-in entertainment, recreation, restaurants & shopping (gives you a feel of visiting a fun fair – children no longer say “no” to temples, it’s a good weekend dhamaka for them!). And the outlook of the Poojaris[4] – from a-poor-man-who-ate-nothing-but-what-was-served-to-God to today’s ultra modern man who manages all his appointments using a Blackberry and travels using different cars to different temples.

I am not at all saying the above changes are bad – I welcome the changes, esp. if it’s positive and hence this post! Yes, almost everything has changed, except may be the dressing style and costumes of Gods.

People envisaged Gods[5] as human beings and each God represented few noble qualities. I believe there are multiple reasons why this was done – (a) people have different tastes in life, as in some people like dosa[6] over rice and some others like rotis[7]. So, it’s like giving more options to people – the path doesn’t matter, end goal is what matters (b) Associating all good qualities to one God may be too much for people, which might hinder focused prayer – So, if you want to start a new business, pray to Ganapathy; if you want to study well, think of Saraswathi etc (c) More temples, more spirituality, more travel, more rituals and yeah, more holidays.

If we observe closely, the costumes of most of these Gods haven’t changed over centuries. (May be except Ganapathy, who gets interesting costumes during Vinayagar Churthi day) Some of the things that remain the same with Gods

  • Many of Gods still not wearing shirts (Yes, many centuries back, people weren’t wearing shirts, but today things have changed)
  • Same old Sarees, dhothis/veshtis
  • Some of them still using natural dresses like tiger / deer skin, which are obsolete and illegal in today’s context
  • Primitive traveling modes like using animals such as rats, peacocks, tigers etc
  • Archaic weapons like rustic Vel (Spear), Thandayutham (A heavy sphere at the end of the rod – a blow using this tool would be lethal), Chakras (Wheel with sharp teeth, which is capable of traveling at Akthar’s bowling speed and cut off opponent’s intended organ)
  • Using antiquated fragrance and body sprays such as natural flowers & sandal

One of the reasons of reduced levels of interests in Gods/Spirituality with the new generation youth / kids is because they find it difficult to associate themselves with Gods ;) – they don’t understand the old customs and dressing style. So, here comes some interesting ideas for changing the outlook of the Gods

  • Vinayaga: He’s the god of Knowledge. The IT & gadgets geek. Always seen with the latest laptops, mobile phones, iPod and Kindle. He believes that life can be simplified by IT and technology. (There is an interesting story to tell to kids: When his dad Shiva asked him and his bro Muruga to explore the world, his bro was using a private jet and Harley Davidson to travel around the world… our intelligent Ganesha used Internet Explorer, Google and Wikipedia to explore the entire world!). He has put on some extra weight because of a typical software guy’s lifestyle, not much of exercise and spending most of the time in front of laptop. He blogs quite a bit. He’s up to to date on everything happening around the world.
  • Muruga: God of Righteousness, Courage, Beauty and Romance. Wears Rayban glasses with full black dress and has a machine gun (as in Matrix movie) with 2 babes by his side in a Harley Davidson bike. His beauty, charm, cleanliness, style and personality make every gal fall for him.
  • Ayyappa: God of bachelorhood. Believes that desire, lust, jealousy, greed and anger are the reasons of worry in this world. Lives in secluded places – spends most of the time in introspection, meditation and thinking about how to make the world a better place. Doesn’t mean he’s meek & feeble, his alter ego is fierce and ruthless when it comes to fighting baddies of the world.
  • Shiva: God of all gods. But simple in outlook – just white pajama. Likes pet animals a lot, ranging from snakes to bulls. He’s the international arbitrator and his panchayathu always happens in the abodes of Kailaayam. People respect him a lot for everything he does.
  • Vishnu: Wealthy god. Wears long gold chains with precious stones and lots of bracelets, rings etc. Silk cloth when not in office. When he goes to job, he wears fine fabric Raymond suits with Golden silky tie. It can’t be perfect than him. He’s all powerful and can be present in multiple places at the same time under different identities.
  • Brahma: He’s an interesting contradiction – on one hand, he’s the most creative person, on the other hand he does the most repetitive job. He sets an example to people by saying that even if you have to do the same job again and again in life, make it interesting by being creative and different in every time you do it. He likes casual dressing – Denim jeans with half sleeve shirts, tucked in properly. Always seen wearing the cool Reebok slippers.
  • Shakthi: Goddesses of Bravery, Power and a portrayal of equality of men and women. A very charming face and looking at it, everyone would get a feel of seeing their mom. She too has 2 kinds of dresses – very traditional & ultra-modern.
  • Saraswathi: Goddesses of intelligence, wisdom, education and knowledge. Very professional in outlook – be it suits, or salwar kameez or sarees, she looks very sophisticated. Solves The Hindu crossword in minutes and just takes fraction of seconds to solve the “Hard” level sudoku.
  • Lakshmi: Goddesses of wealth. Uses very costly costumes – from Swiss watches to Lexus cars, there is luxury in everything. She works closely with Wall Street. She’s fair, honest and confident in everything she deals with.
  • Anjaneya: Great gym body with countless folds. Carries 100 Kg dumbbells in either hand. Always wears tight T-shirts showing his muscles and track pants.

Hopefully these new outlooks and dressing styles create more interest among the youth for God and spirituality. Of course, it’s just for the initial attraction – once they dwell into it more, they might just realize that spirituality & God are not external, everything is internal – May be the search begins inside.

And may be couple of centuries from now, an MMS might write a blog to change the dressing style of the Gods from what we discussed above to the style then.

[1] These are the ways of worshipping, the most important ritual of waving lights or fragrant smoke to Gods

[2] Coincidental – both these names are my good friend's names

[3] Means King of all kings, the greatest King of Chola empire, who ruled South India long back (I’m poor in remembering dates!)

[4] The worshipper of God, who does all the rituals to God on behalf of the people

[5] Because of my limited knowledge about other religions, I am limiting to Hindu Gods/Goddesses

[6] Can be thought of as flat bread or pizza made out of rice flour

[7] Indian bread

MAdSense

Google's AdSense! A very interesting and a successful concept in deed! It, along with AdWords, contribute to nearly 99% of revenues for this $175bn MarketCap Internet-Behemoth. With Google's products becoming integral part of our life, its impact could leapfrog with the advent of rumored gPhone.

Here is an imaginative prototype of MAdSense, the next generation AdSense. This software sits in all Google applications and gPhone applications, analyzing everything that you do (e.g. email, chat, phone conversations, meetings, blogs, calender etc) - Based on the analysis (yes, only computer algorithm, Google's privacy policy doesn't allow programmers to read them - so, people can relax!), you would be given various suggestions. Some samples
  • For a college student: who doesn't take bath regularly, it gives a reminder "Last bath since 12 days, 13 mins, 34 sec (and counting!)". Text Ads from gPhone would flash "Replacement for bathing: Killbuoy Deo. Effective for 720 hrs. Kills germs and even ppl standing next to you"
  • For a guy who is in dating spree: MAdSense uses 32-Generation Artificial Intelligence programs. The MAdSense client programs are called Agents and could communicate among themselves intelligently. The MaMa module of the Agents analyze innumerable profiles of Google users and suggests dating partners based on their interests, location, availability etc. You just need to hit "I'm feeling Yucky" button - the best matching profile would be presented. A sample profile would read as "Careless, lovally, god-fearing. Free between 8 to 9 pm today. Would prefer Chicken Briyaani with double eggs. Pick-up and drop near MG Rd"
  • For a computer nerd: Runs a program on the Distributed Agents System - DNA analysis of whether he could marry Priyanka Chopra. gPhone flashes "Simulation #1055 out of 1048576 - 0.001% complete. Current analysis suggests that Priyanka mighty be a risky proposition for you - complete mismatch of genes"
  • For a workaholic: Flashes the message "Wife and children out of home for last 2 days. Dog wants to pee. Go home and help it"
  • For a Cricket fanatic: (He watches every damn match!): (a) Mesg window1: Live Cricket match b/n "Royapuram Rockers" and "Sunnaambhu Kaalvaa Sharks" - Sharks need 5 runs from 5 balls with 5 wickets in hand to win the "Machi Vests & Briefs Weekly Cup" (b) Message window2 showing the 1983 world cup win by India (c) Mesg window 3 - India winning T20 in 2007 (d) India winning England in Lords (e) window 5 showing ESPN compere, Dhoni, explaining the rule of new format T2 (two-two) match
  • For a movie buff: Flashes the news "Sharukh Khan just got up. His wife is getting him a Chilly tea with salt and pepper for acting very romantically with Maanavi Dixit, the daughter of the once-bollywood-queen, Madhuri Dixit"
  • For a guy who watches news channels 24*7: ODTV streaming a poll - "Should Rama marry Seetha in the serial Khahani Chor Chor Kii?". Local channel, Bannerghatta TV shows a clipping with traffic jam for last 7 hours - Helicopters are being flown by Traffic police to find out the cow that has blocked the traffic.
Ok, this post might sound ridiculous for many.. but, it's not far away - Demand "are" there! Just that we need a able provider like Google or Apple or Microsoft to revolutionize this space.

PS: MAd sense => Meta AdSense

What If?

A creative prof in our not-so-creative course said that "What-If" analysis could turn out to be really interesting... Let me try out a few
  1. What If "Giant Wheel" is not circular, instead elliptical?
  2. What If kids don't learn anything new?
  3. What If women stop shopping?
  4. What If your dog doesn't bark at all?
  5. What If Indian politicians speak less?
  6. What If you feel sleepy during the class?
  7. What If Prof feels sleepy during his class?
  8. What If life expectancy becomes 400 years?
  9. What If our masculine ant proposes to the beautiful elephant?
  10. What If there are no computers and internet?

And here is one possible set of answers:
  1. Law of fairness would be violated
  2. Would turn out to be adults of today (majority!)
  3. Men in peace. GDP(new) = 0.526*GDP(old)
  4. You are feeding it too much. Reduce
  5. People would do useful work.
  6. Sleep!
  7. Then also, you can sleep! Alternatively, you can empathize and ask him to sleep.
  8. Our man can have a family binary tree of 20 generations with 1048575 people (2097150 ppl, if we include spouses as well) -Difficult to remember so many names! hmm.. what if everybody decides to have 8 children, the likes of earlier generations - our man would have 2305843009213693950 ppl in his family tree, before he dies (His family is ~350million times the world population estimated in July 2007!)
  9. Queen Elephant IV can say "If you can take me on your back. I will"
  10. I would be peacefully sleeping and you would be doing something more useful.

Sothappal Express Transport Corporation (SETC)

My longest blog so far, but the lightest one too...

8:35 PM Sunday. In "Shakes & Creams" at Adyar. After having the mini-get-together of my school-mates, I'm supposed to catch the 9:15 PM bus from Koyambedu to Madurai. Was pretty frustrated, when the Auto-wala asked 120 bucks to go to bus-station. Decided to go to Kathipara/Guindy by an Auto and from there by an inter-city bus, which I thought would be faster and cheaper. It was 9.05 PM, when I got down in Kathipara. I thought myself "I am going to miss the bus for sure.. That too on a Sunday night... All the trains have a waiting list of more 150 and hence the trains would be damn crowded.. Cant change my mind to go in train... Should be able to get another bus in the station.. But who knows.. They mite also be crowded.. Can't stand and travel for more than 10 hours.. " Though I wasn't worried too much about missing the bus (since I was going to travel alone, not much luggage and the only work I had to do on Monday and the rest of the week was to eat and sleep), I felt that I would be lucky if the bus was late. At Kathipara, I got into a PP (supposed to be a Point-To-Point bus from Villupuram to Koyambedu) to go to the bus station. Out of curiosity, I took from my purse the SETC online reservation coupon to the Madurai.. Surprised, when I looked at the departure time! It was 9.45 PM!! Thank God!!! I got 30 more mins! Quite contented then and out of too much travel that day, I was about to fall asleep.. But I told myself "just half an hour - After which I can just sleep peacefully in the bus.. and tomorrow & the entire next week - can relax.. that too with awesome mom-prepared-food.." Kaasi & Udayam theatres passed by.. Sweet college memories.. Reached the station by around 9:15 PM.. 30 more mins to kill.. Was just roaming.. Ok, let us come to the topic-in-hand.. yes, SETC [State Express Transport Corportation, as the officials call it..]

A ~45 year old gentleman was standing outside a bus. He looked like a government employee. Seemed as if he wants everyone to follow rules. He was shouting at the conductor, who was inside the bus busy giving tickets to the passengers. Suddenly a hardy, black & bald person came out of the bus. He just got hold of our gentleman's shirt.. fatak fatak.. Slaps and blows on his face and chest.. Our gentleman was beaten up by none other than the bus-conductor, whom our man was cursing earlier. Our man seemed dreadful when he was shouting. The moment he got a blow, he started behaving very timid and weak like a child, who gets beaten up by its teacher for its mistakes. Our man's argument was that he never touched the conductor, but why the heck was he getting beaten up the conductor. The conductor was not at all listening - Just kicks, blows and bumps were the only things he knew at that moment. Knowing that he can't stand against the conductor physically, our man started running. Conductor started chasing. [The crowd was just watching all these proceedings merrily without bothering about the reason (Including me!) except that few more conductors joined the company of our conductor] Both of them reached the SETC office - I hope it was the division manager who was coming out (like the Naattaamai). He was supposed to hear this case today. Both of them started putting forth their viewpoints. All the conductors were supporting his colleague irrespective of knowing what happened. The manager acted as if he was hearing everything. He had the clear intention of saving his employee and hence asked the crowd to disperse; just advised our gentleman not to fight in the public like this. "What the hell!" - I guessed this is how the gentleman would have thought. Wow.. Wonderful!! This is the way, our state owned Express Trans. Corp. handles their much valued customers. I really didn't know the mistake done by our Mr. Poor Customer. But whatever he has done, I thought he didn't deserve that kind of treatment. Really poor fella!

Oops.. I was getting late for the bus.. Already 9:30 PM.. It has been a really looooong time since I traveled in SETC. Was a little hesitant to travel in SETC seeing the above treatment for customers.. But was too lazy to go to some other station to catch a private bus there and also, what if I don’t get tickets there.. Known ghost is better than the unknown god, as people say. [Though now I feel I should have tried to know the God then ;)] 9.45 PM Sharp. Bus did NOT come, as usual. I started my marathon waiting in the station. But after 15 mins started feeling uneasy, because of the weather and the crowd.. No announcements regarding the bus. I went to their office and enquired - He said "Ada yarappa ivan (who is this fellow?!) The 8:30 PM madurai bus has just come and we are expecting of couple of more buses before the 9.45 one." Again, some frustration and started chiding the SETC. Went to a cool-drink shop.. Was drinking of something refreshingly cool.. Just the all-new Limca advertisement came to my mind.. I simply loved the ad - water showering on the face of the people who drink it and an amazing BGM and song.. Though I didn't expect showers, I simply wanted to have it. Had it. Wow, pretty cool and refreshing. After finishing it, went and sat in a waiting chair next to a couple carrying a 1-year-old child. The person asked whether I was going to Madurai [He guessed right because the platform was intended for Madurai buses]. I said yes and that I was waiting for 9.45 one. He laughed at me and said that he was traveling in the bus which started some 15 mins back, but broke down before going out of the station and that he was told by officers that he would be allotted seats in any other Madurai bus. I thought his situation was more difficult than mine. After sometime, a dabba [i.e. very worn-out] bus with "Madurai" board came to the platform. A big crowd just surrounded the bus-door and was expecting the conductor to come out. These poor people haven't reserved tickets, but were curious to know whether there are seats still left. I initially thought it was my bus since it was 10.30 already, but when I was told that it was the 9.30 bus, I had a mix of feelings - sad that my bus hadn't come yet; happy that I didn't have to travel in the stupid dabba bus. Remember, there were neither announcements nor any sign-boards about any buses. People just leap around as soon as a bus comes, without knowing any detail. I was dog-tired waiting for my bus in the jam-packed station in the sultry summer. Thought of having one more limca, but got cold water bottle instead. [To be honest, just liked the Advt, not the taste of Limca] 11.05 PM. To my dashing hopes, a haggard 4-wheeler came to the platform with huge noise. "Amazing, my dear boy! Finally your bus is here.. You are going to ride in an exhilarating bullock cart today.. Enjoy!!" tickled my mind. "Oh, bad.. it's not fair to get such a stupid bus after waiting for 1+ hours" I thought myself, but consoled myself later that it's just going to be for 10 hours.

Got into the bus. The seats were awesomely pathetic. The interiors were amazingly screwed up. The windows were either strong and stuck in one place like politians' urge to come to power or very loose like their policy towards forming a coalition party. "Forget the bus. Just sleep. Just 10 hours!" I thought myself. Bus started and I felt I was put into a machine in a rice-mill. I realized that sound is omnipresent in SETC buses - It comes not just from engine, but from seats, windows, snoring people etc. The bus was agitating heavily - I thought it was going high-speed like a super-sonic plane, but soon realized that it was not the case, when a very old lorry carrying lots of stuff just overtook our bus. Thanks Einstein! I tried hard to sleep. Within hours after the bus started, the driver stopped the bus in a road-side-restaurant [I hope he gets free food in all these kind of restaurants] One person came inside the bus and announced in loud voice that the bus won't stop anywhere else till it reaches Madurai and hence advised people to have food there and use the free-toilet facility in the restaurant. People just came out of their dreams, when they heard about "free-toilet" facility. Most of the people who were getting down for toilet, just ended up in having some food. Good marketing - Give something free to people, they would be ready to accept/buy anything and everything including Chief Ministers. ;) Because the driver gets free food, the driver stopped in more restaurants like the previous [Some of them didn't offer free toilets and people used natural toilets!] Around 6 AM. I had some good sleep for 3 hours because of 3-consecutive-day-travel. I thought we would have gone past Trichy and would reach Madurai soon. I asked my neighbour whether we reached Trichy. That man got terribly angry and replied "This bus is not going to reach Madurai. Stupid Bus! More stupid Driver!! Dont make me angry and dont expect to go to Madurai before lunch. Still need to travel 2 hours to reach Trichy". On hearing that, I too became angry. But soon calmed down, realizing that I can't do anything about it. Slept and read a magazine alternatively. The bus stopped in few more restaurants - It didn't matter much to me.

Finally reached Madurai @ 1 PM (yes, the next day) and my home @ around 2.30 PM. My mom and dad were waiting for me with lunch. The marathon 15+ hour journey (which is supposed to be completed in 10 hours] just made me hate few things, which I used to like earlier - Long-Bus-Journeys and Government Buses. In childhood, I was a car and bus maniac. I used to analyze different kinds of buses and cars. E.g. In 1980s, I had the idea of having sleepers in buses(similar to trains), which is getting executed in private buses these days. I liked Government buses more than the private ones (though the latter are better in many sense). This is because I feel Govt buses are peoples' buses and any loss/gain is just people's. I dont like the fact that private buses are getting crowded, while state owned buses are mostly empty.

Ok, enough of complaints and self-talks... Let me be a little more constructive now.. Yes the state-owned-transport (esp. in Tamil Nadu) has its own problems compared to private buses - (a) Not caring about customers/people (b) Hapless organization/management (c) Not adaptive to changes (d) Second-rate buses (e) Poor efficiency. It's an endless negative cycle of loss-making and poor service. Let me try to put forward some simple suggestions that could help overcoming them

  1. Privatisation: Proven formula in many sectors. Instead of privatizing entirely, do it in phases. Routes which are currently operating at loss by Govt should be considered for privatization. For a particular route, instead of allowing any private operator, give exclusive rights to a couple of operators (operators chosen by bidding process), so that it has twin benefits - Avoiding monopoly, at the same time making the private operators feel that it's an lucrative business. Strict guidelines (reg. timing, services, price etc) should formulated for them to operate.
  2. Learn from others: Karnataka state-owned KSRTC is performing pretty well. Varied services for different type of customers - Express to A/C volvo coaches - In fact, in many cases, in Karanataka people prefer KSRTC over private buses. Well organized online reservation facility.
  3. Quality buses: The current worn-out buses should be phased out over a couple of years - The old buses which were running long distances can be (a) converted so that they are used for local intra city bus service (b) Sold out to other sources like private or other states. The new buses should be of high quality, built by experienced builders. The maintenance can also be outsourced to contractors. Yes, it could lead to short-term losses, but should help in long-term.
  4. Consolidation of Bus services: Currently, the entire state-owned bus service is divided into multiple units. Though it helps in easier management, it makes the operating cost higher [E.g. The Cuddalore/Villuppuram unit builds quality buses in-house in a very cost effective manner, but no other unit takes advantage of this] Doesn't mean we have to combine everything to single unit -Just consolidate big items like bus-body-building, servicing etc.
  5. Customer attraction & satisfaction: Just need to realize what Gandhiji says "Customers are not dependent on you, you are dependent on them". Introduce new schemes like 'Frequent travelers Advantage' program, Interactive Feedback system etc. Make people & the employees understand that it's *their* transport corporation.
  6. Effective management & hence reduce inefficiencies: A lot can be written under this.

Most importantly, implementing all these needs a strong, intelligent and honest leadership. Once done, these great qualities could go positively downwards to all section of the transport corporation in transforming Sothappal to SUPERB Express Transport Corporation.

Superstar Vs Surya

/* Proceed, only if you can understand Tamil */

Namma Thalaivar, "Superstar" aanathukku oru mukkiya kaaranam avaroda movie dialogues. Though some people say it's only for making "scene," I think his one line dialogues are chosen with deeper meanings. E.g. "Naan oru thadava sonna Nooru thadava sonna mathiri". This basically advises people to listen carefully & hence sharpen their listening skills, so that they dont waste either their or the speaker's time.

One of my most favourite dialogues from Rajni is
"Kashta padaama Ethuvum Kidaikkaathu;
Kashta padaama kidai-kirathu Nilaikkaathu"
Surya went ahead of one step in Gajni and said
"Success aganumna..
Kashta pattu Uzhaichaa mattum pothaathu..
Isthta pattu Uzhai-kanum"
Very True...

Ok, coming back to who can fill the SuperStar's Slot today..
  • Vijay - Has Masses, but lacks Multifariousness
  • Ajit - Is Talented, but also Tainted
  • Vikram - Shows Variety, but needs Consistency
  • Surya - No Negatives, but also no Guarantees
Simply put, Everyone is good in one aspect or the other. But none can match our Thalaivar. :-)
